In a recent Kama‘aina Shopper, there’s an article about our politicians blowing hot air about a proposal to establish an “aerospace district” (with your tax dollars, of course) to “attract companies and well-paying jobs” to Hawaii. What nonsense!
What companies would move to a place with no infrastructure (thanks to state neglect), a poorly educated work force (thank you, Department of Education) and sky-high prices (thank you, Matson)?
They want to launch missiles again. They only feasible place to do this is Ka‘u, where this has already been loudly turned down.
What reality do these guys live in? What are they smoking? Do they listen to the voters — ever? How can they possibly compete with something like the Kennedy Space Center?
And it’s going under the Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism (“Come see our beaches, luaus and missiles?”).
Instead of wasting state and county tax dollars (which they haven’t got) on this boondoggle, maybe they should spend it on education (no, can’t do that) or infrastructure (no, can’t do that) instead of on their crony consultants. If our unique environment draws these companies, they’re coming here anyway.
We already have an aerospace district, and it’s between their ears!
These guys need a reality check — or the voters need to give them one.

Defending ‘Dave’
Regarding Cal Thomas’ May 1 column: Aloha, Cal. I loved the movie “Dave,” but you seem to have seen a totally different movie than I did.
Dave and his friend did not spend all night “balancing the federal budget,” as you said. What they did was shift “unnecessary and wasteful spending” to keep another necessary children’s program from being eliminated. As the saying goes … you are allowed your own opinion, but not your own facts.
Next time, get your facts straight.

Follow the money
Your headline and article about the Senate forking over money to keep the U.S. Postal Service solvent completely missed the point. The money that was “given” to them was money the postal service had been required to put into an accelerated “retirement” fund at an exorbitantly higher rate than any other government agency. And now, lo and behold, the same Republican-controlled Senate that imposed those fiscally ruinous requirements (thus making the “unprofitable” postal service a prime target for privatization) has, in a fit of “generosity,” “given” the money (back) to them, averting curtailments and office closures that were completely unnecessary in the first place. What a bunch of sweethearts!
Hey, friends and neighbors, better keep your eye on Social Security!
